The Butte College Health, Kinesiology, and Athletics Department offers quality education within a student-centered environment that provides comprehensive instruction through various modalities. The curriculum incorporates innovative teaching methods and flexible scheduling that foster critical thinking and support the needs of our diverse student population. The uniqueness of our integrative discipline is that we work to empower students to develop healthy behaviors, engage in physical activity, and promote healthy lifelong modifications, which can enhance their quality of life.
The Health, Kinesiology, and Athletics Department offers a comprehensive two-year program leading to an Associate of Arts Degree as well as an Associates of Arts Transfer Degree (AA-T)in Kinesiology. This major is designed for students who will transfer to a four-year institution to pursue a degree in Kinesiology and related degrees. Additionally, the activity courses within the Kinesiology Department are a mandatory requirement in area "F" for all students working towards their respective Associates degree.
Mats in GYM 113 and Fitness Center mats are currently getting replaced.
Funds were used for higher priority safety needs to ensure proper equipment recertification for our student-athletes. This included NOCSAE certification for all protective helmets and shoulder pads.
Rowing Machine, Assist Pull-up/Bar Dip Machine, and 4 Life Cycles
The staff feels these are a necessity to maintain the integrity of the Fitness Center. Both these machines are highly requested by the students to continue to achieve their fitness goals.
Since the pandemic is still amongst us, we are forced to do remote learning for the entire 2020- 2021 academic year. The college did require all faculty to pass 3 components of distance education which was a good start. Some of our faculty still had to be mentored the entire summer even after passing the DE requirements. Instructors worked with other members who had absolutely no experience with Canvas or even some aspects of basic computer skills and other software. This collaboration was very successful as all faculty members within the department had their Canvas classes ready to go for the first day of class. We, as a department, stressed the importance of covering all SLOs for a class to ensure each SLO was measurable through assessment, demonstration, short writes, discussion, or participation even though we were using an online format. In addition, we are having a Zoom Department Flex Workshop where all faculty members will share their Canvas classes including possible assignments, activities, APPs, etc. that worked in their classes as well as ones that did not work. This workshop will be offered next semester as well.
HEALTH
Over the last couple of years, our Health FTES has somewhat declined. This could be due to the overall college lower enrollment due to the Campfire, COVID, & Remote Learning. As a department, we are exploring ways to improve enrollment through various public relations and promotional activities.
Health’s retention rate at 89% surpasses the college’s current performance, standards, and goals of 73%, while Health’s success rate of 73% is slightly below the college desired 75%. With the introduction of remote learning for all classes, the use of this modality could be a contributor to a lower student success rate. As a department, we are exploring ways to improve retention and success by increasing our interactions with students and reaching out to those in need.
KINESIOLOGY
Kinesiology FTES has declined over the past 2 years but this too could be due to the Campfire & COVID. The department is working diligently on reviewing our schedule as well as offering new classes both online and face-2-face. In the past, not being allowed to offer more than one Kinesiology activity class online has been a determent to the growth of our program. We will continue to explore new opportunities in this area. As a department, we are exploring ways to improve enrollment through various public relations and promotional activities.
Kinesiology retention of 94% and success rate of 84% far surpasses the college’s current performance, standards, and goals of 73% and 75% respectively.
The Kinesiology discipline had a very good(71%) increase of degrees earned between 2018 to 2019. We believe that the addition of our AA-T degree has helped to increase the awards earned by our students.
With the Department's creation of the AA-T in Kinesiology, we have already increased our degree awards by 71% from 2018-2019. With continued Departmental public relations & promotional activities targeting our local high schools, our goal is to continue to increase the interest in our program thus increase the degrees earned. In so doing, our department will be supporting the college in meeting the goal to increase by 35 percent the number of California Community College students transferring annually to a UC or CSU. Also, by developing and enhancing our curriculum by continuing to explore new courses, certificates, and degree options, including a Personal Training certificate, we will be supporting the Vision for Success goal to increase by at least 20 percent the number of California Community College students annually who acquire associate degrees, credentials, certificates, or specific skill sets that prepare them for an in-demand job.
The Health, Kinesiology, and Athletics Department supports the college in meeting its Strategic Direction and Priorities by:
Enhancing a Culture of Completion and Goal Achievement:
Supporting Student, Faculty, and Staff Success
Using Data-Informed Processes for Continuous Improvement
Maximizing Resources to Support Student Learning
Modeling Sustainability
Enhancing a Culture of Equity and Inclusiveness
Implementations:
Recommendations and actions to be addressed
The department goals for 2020-2021 are to continue to refine our schedule to maximize enrollment and possibly create more classes to fit our student needs. We will continue to explore ways to improve student retention and success. In addition, we will continue to grow our true online Kinesiology professional and activity class offerings along with making adjustments to our general A.A. degree.
Strategy 1 - Course Strategy
The Health, Kinesiology, and Athletics Department will continue to refine its schedule and explore ways to offer courses that will be conducive with student needs (block, short term, and distance learning). The department will strive to offer courses and programs that reflect current trends, professional career needs, and student interests.
This strategy mirrors the recommendations of our Program Review Validation Team as well as Butte Colleges Educational Master Plan Priorities #2- Increase the Capacity and Capability of Faculty and Staff, #3- More Flexible Schedules/Alternative Delivery."

GYM 110 & 111 Updated Smart Classrooms | The GYM Smart Classrooms consist of antiquated and non-standard equipment, and are often rendered non-functional due to this equipment breaking. IT has done what they can to upgrade these rooms in piecemeal fashion with leftover equipment, but these rooms must be totally upgraded to bring them to standard and allow us to have a consistently functioning and positive student learning environment. IT estimates a cost of $32,000 per classroom ($25K for IT, and $7K for electrical contracting and facilities work) for all smart classrooms. |

Relocate and develop new golf facility | Golf needs an area that is allocated for golf only so classes can be taught without the worry of hitting someone in another class. Also, with the recent addition of the solar panels adjacent to the lower tennis courts, the golf classes no longer have a dedicated instructional area. |
