This program is dedicated to assisting older adults with enhancement and maintenance of mental and physical abilities for the enjoyment of life and independence.
The Healthy Aging and Living (HAL) Program serves older adults living in independent and assisted living senior residential facilities. Courses offered at these facilities are HAL 301, 302, 303, 304, 305, and 306. Classes are designed to enhance and enrich mental and physical capabilities.
The COVID crisis shut down the senior residential facilities where we held our HAL classes.
During this time of closure the instructional delivery model was changed from Associate Faculty to Instructional Service Agreement Instructors. This new model is designed to allow more flexibility for instruction.
The senior facilities have been closed down until recently. They are starting to reopen. We were able to schedule three sections for Spring 2022.
1. The HAL Department Coordinator has been meeting with CEO's and residential staff to
promote program participation
2. Because some of the HAL Instructors taught in other departments at Butte College, they
could not longer teach in the HAL Program. Four of the instructors have opted to remain
teaching in the HAL Program.
1. The HAL Department has been working to restore the program.
A program Review of the Special Programs Department was completed in Spring 2018. No specific HAL recommendations were given.
1. Promote classes and enrollments in the senior residential facilities and possibly through other
community venues
2. Develop a focused method for tracking SLO assessments and results
Strategy 1 - Re-establish higher enrollments
Meet with three more independent senior living facilities to promote participation in the program.
Also, encourage those already participating to offer more classes per week.
The HAL program has lost a lot of student participation due to the COVID crisis and the changes in the program. Once the HAL Coordinator is able to explain the program to residential administrators, it will encourage them to participate.
Strategy 2 - Focused tracking of SLO's
Because the HAL Program model of instruction has changed, a new method of tracking the SLO's has to be developed. Collaboration between the HAL Coordinator and the Instructional Service Agreement Instructors will take place for the development of new SLO assessment measures.
The SLO's for the program have to be assessed accurately for student learning to be successful and to indicate areas of needed improvement.
